Can Someone Else Touch Your Tarot Cards?

A question that often arises among those new to tarot is whether or not it’s okay for someone else touch your tarot cards?

Opinions vary, and the answer might not be as straightforward as you think. Let’s delve into this interesting topic and explore different viewpoints!

🌔 What I think:
Personally, I think someone else can touch your tarot cards; however, you might want to limit the handling to preserve the cards’ energy. It depends on you. Some of my friends believe for other reasons like infusing the cards with the querent’s energy, potentially enhancing the reading.

The Tradition of Not Touching

In the past, some tarot readers said that others should not touch your tarot cards.

They believed that another person’s energy might change the cards. This could make the reading wrong.

Not everyone agrees with this idea, but I can certainly understand it. At least to me it makes sense!

Though I explained what I believe just above!

Different Beliefs

  1. Personal Energy Matters: Some tarot readers think that the cards are connected to their owner’s energy. They say that other people touching the cards might mess this up.
  2. Sharing is Okay: Others believe that sharing the cards and letting others touch them can be a good thing. It might help the reader connect with the person they are reading for.
  3. It’s Just a Tool: Some people see tarot cards as just cards. They don’t think that touching them makes any difference.

What you believe might be something that changes over time, this is what happened to me personally.

At first, I did agree with the notion that tarot cards are somewhat sacred to the owner or intended owner, and shouldn’t be “messed” with by others…

But as I went down my own tarot journey this idea changed and I now simply thing that others touching my cards is okay, as long as it’s within a reading and we are all aligned in what we are doing in that present moment.

I also think that it can be rather enriching for someone else to get to know some tarot cards, which is why I allow it.

It’s okay to change your ideas overtime. Alright, lets keep going…

What the “Experts” Say

The world of tarot is filled with various traditions, beliefs, and practices, and experts in the field often have diverse opinions on whether or not others should touch your tarot cards.

  1. Traditionalist View: Some seasoned tarot readers uphold the tradition that the cards should only be touched by their owner. They believe that the cards become attuned to the owner’s energy, and another person’s touch might interfere with that connection.
  2. Modern Interpretation: Other tarot experts feel that allowing others to handle the cards can enhance a reading. By letting the querent (the person receiving the reading) touch the cards, they believe a stronger connection is forged between the reader, the querent, and the cards themselves.
  3. Psychological Perspective: Some psychologists and counselors who use tarot in their practice may view the cards as a tool for introspection rather than a mystical object. For them, whether or not someone else touches the cards may have more to do with personal preference than any spiritual belief.
  4. Cultural Considerations: Different cultures and traditions may also influence the views on this subject. Some may have strict rules about handling sacred or spiritual objects, while others may be more relaxed.
  5. Tarot Educators: Those who teach tarot often encourage students to find what works best for them. They might suggest experimenting with different approaches to see how it feels to allow or disallow others to touch the cards.
  6. Ethical Considerations: Some experts in the tarot community emphasize ethics and consent, highlighting the importance of communication and mutual respect between reader and querent.

What Should You Do?

If you have tarot cards, you get to choose what you believe. Here’s how you can decide:

  • Think about what feels right to you.
  • Talk to others who use tarot cards and see what they think.
  • Try letting others touch your cards and see how it feels.

If you know others will be around your cards and you’d rather they keep their hands off (which is fine) then very politely state this at the beginning so they understand. Nothing wrong with that at all!

Can I Touch Someone Else’s Tarot Cards?

Honestly, it depends on the situation. In reality, there might not be any need to touch or hold other people’s cards, but in some situations it might happen.

Still, If you’re around someone’s personal tarot cards, it’s always best to ask first.

People have different feelings about their cards, and asking shows you care about those feelings. Now, if you’re getting a reading, the reader might even want you to shuffle or pick the cards. But again, each reader is different, so just follow their lead.

In places where there are shared decks, you’re usually fine to touch them, but handle them nicely. And if you’re ever in doubt, trust your gut.

If it feels like you should ask or just not touch them, then listen to that feeling. It’s all about respect and being in tune with what’s going on around you.
